LaGuardia Airport runway closed by sinkhole expected to reopen Saturday
A sinkhole near Runway 4/22 at LaGuardia Airport continues disrupting operations Friday, May 22, 2026, causing ongoing flight delays and cancellations during the busy Memorial Day travel rush.
Crews discovered the sinkhole during a routine morning inspection on Wednesday, prompting an immediate runway closure while engineering teams began conducting investigatory inspections using ground-penetrating radar.
"Out of an abundance of caution, engineering crews are conducting additional inspections that necessitate the continued closure of Runway 4/22," LaGuardia wrote in an update on X.
After missing a projected Thursday reopening, officials now expect to complete surveys and associated repairs by 6 a.m. on Saturday, when the runway is scheduled to reopen.
The Federal Aviation Administration advised travelers to contact their carriers before heading to the airport, while LaGuardia urged passengers to seek flight updates to determine potential delays.
