Labour failed to prepare for power, says Morgan McSweeney
McSweeney said Labour lacked a clear plan for governing and admitted the winter fuel payment cut damaged the party early in office.
Former Downing Street chief of staff Morgan McSweeney admitted in a BBC interview that Labour failed to properly prepare for government before the 2024 general election win.
Labour leaders failed to discuss how the modern era differed from their last time in power, leaving them without a strategy for rapid delivery. McSweeney noted the state is "really out of shape and is unable to deliver for people."
Admitting to early errors, McSweeney cited cutting winter fuel allowance for ten million pensioners as a "politically damaging mistake" set at "too low a level," and acknowledged damage from a row over donor-funded minister freebies.
Resigning earlier this year over Lord Peter Mandelson's appointment as ambassador, McSweeney told the BBC he found Sir Keir Starmer's departure "very sad" and was "still processing" events.
Moving away from British politics, McSweeney said he is "professionally moving in a completely different direction now," expressing interest in democratic security, AI's impact, and geopolitical tech risks.
