LA mayor calls for 'accountability' amid immigration crackdown
Congressional Democrats plan hearings to probe racial profiling and civil rights violations after reports show at least 170 U.S. citizens were detained during immigration raids, officials said.
- On Monday, congressional Democrats announced the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee will hold its first hearing in Los Angeles to investigate ICE arrests of U.S. citizens, hoping it will occur soon.
- Amid reporting from ProPublica and advocates, federal raids since summer targeted car washes in Los Angeles, with the CLEAN Car Wash Workers Association reporting more than 250 detained and at least 170 U.S. citizens held nationwide.
- On Monday at City Hall, Congressman Robert Garcia demanded DHS records and said, `Beginning today we are demanding that all records and documents, particularly when citizens have been detained and how officers are treating citizens and being detained are available to our committee.`
- The House Oversight Committee and Senate plan to investigate ICE misconduct, urging Angelenos to upload videos to a new tracker site, while DHS and the White House did not respond.
- Bass said, `What is happening to undocumented immigrants is also happening to U.S. citizens, which means that this can happen to anyone, to all of us, at any period of time`, amid earlier deployments of nearly 5,000 California National Guard members and 700 Marines to Los Angeles.
