Kosovo heads for another early election in a prolonged political crisis
Lawmakers could not reach the quorum needed to choose a head of state, and the Central Election Commission said snap polls will follow within 45 days.
On Tuesday, April 28, 2026, Kosovo's parliament automatically dissolved after failing to elect a new president by the midnight deadline, triggering snap elections for Europe's youngest nation.
Prime Minister Albin Kurti failed to secure opposition support for his candidate, preventing the 80-lawmaker quorum required by the 120-member assembly to elect a successor to President Vjosa Osmani.
The upcoming vote marks the third parliamentary election in just over a year, extending political deadlock that has impacted the economy of the 2 million residents in the Balkan country.
Acting president Albulena Haxhiu declared at midnight, "Based on the verdict the parliament is considered dissolved," with elections required within 45 days.
Kosovo's aspirations to join the European Union are complicated by these uncertainties, as the bloc requires the nation to mend ties with Serbia to advance toward the 27-nation union.
Skupština Kosova nije izabrala predsednika zemlje, što automatski znači održavanje novih parlamentarnih izbora - biće to treći u poslednjih godinu i po dana.
Kosovo is facing the third parliamentary election in just 15 months in June 2026. Albin Kurti was able to form a government in February, but the political blockade continues - now because of the dispute over the presidency.
