S. Korea-Operated Vessel Passing Through Strait of Hormuz: Foreign Minister
The transit follows Iran approval and could reduce the number of South Korea-operated vessels stranded near the waterway to 25, officials said.
- On Wednesday, South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun announced that a South Korean oil tanker is currently exiting the Strait of Hormuz, marking the first passage of a Korea-managed ship through the waterway since the war began.
- Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi agreed to ensure vessel safety during phone talks earlier this week, enabling the tanker's passage along an Iranian-designated route.
- The South Korea-flagged tanker Universal Winner, stranded near Qatar since late February, began its transit Tuesday after receiving Iranian approval and carries more than 20 crew members bound for Ulsan.
- Tensions remain high following the May 4 incident when the Panama-flagged cargo ship HMM Namu was struck by "two unidentified aircraft," causing an engine room fire and injuring one crew member.
- Tehran has "firmly rejects and categorically denies any allegations regarding the involvement" of its forces in the HMM Namu attack, while a successful transit would reduce South Korea-operated vessels stranded near the strait to 25.
