Anwar: Mosque groundbreaking to proceed after temple relocation
- In 2025, the 130-year-old Dewi Sri Pathrakaliamman temple in Kuala Lumpur's Masjid India neighborhood is set to be relocated after discussions between the temple, Jakel Group, and Kuala Lumpur City Hall .
- The relocation stems from the 2014 sale of government land, where the temple is situated between a block of flats and textile shops, to Jakel Trading, a textile company, with the intention of building a fourth mosque in the area.
- The temple committee stated they were not consulted about the sale but had offered to purchase the land, and the relocation has raised concerns regarding religious equity and urban redevelopment in Malaysia.
- Rights lawyer Zaid Malek questioned the urgency, noting ongoing discussions between the temple, Jakel, and the city hall, stating, "The discussion between the temple, Jakel, and the city hall was still ongoing."
- Despite initial concerns and public backlash, the temple has agreed to relocate to a nearby site within Jalan Masjid India, with DBKL and Jakel promising not to evict or demolish the temple, and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to officiate the groundbreaking ceremony for the new mosque on March 27.
