Kiwis Crush Aitu to Cap Dominant Day for NZ at Rugby League World Cup
New Zealand scored 70 unanswered points after trailing 16-12, turning an early scare into a runaway Rugby League World Cup win.
On Sunday, New Zealand defeated the Cook Islands 82-16 in a Rugby League World Cup clash in Christchurch, overcoming an early scare to secure a dominant victory.
Cook Islands winger Esom Ioka silenced the home crowd with a stunning hat-trick inside eight minutes, briefly putting his side ahead 16-12 midway through the first half.
Jamayne Isaako crossed in the opening minute, and Ronaldo Mulitalo added another five minutes later, while Scott Sorensen put New Zealand back in front before halftime.
The Kiwis flicked the switch, piling on 70 straight points in the second half and scoring eight tries, including three in the final six minutes to overwhelm opponents.
While the Cook Islands struggled to generate offense in the second half, the team will remember Ioka's brilliant first-half cameo as a highlight of the Rugby League World Cup encounter.
