Kishau Dam pact to boost irrigation, water security in UP, says Yogi
The project is expected to move to Union Cabinet approval after the six states resolved water-sharing and financing issues, officials said.
- On Tuesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and chief ministers from six states reached a consensus on the Kishau Multipurpose Dam Project, clearing a major hurdle for the long-pending initiative.
- Constructing a reservoir on the Tons River, the Kishau project will generate hydroelectric power and augment water supplies to resolve long-standing interstate water sharing issues.
- The Centre will provide 90 per cent of funding for the project's water component, while the six states will cover the remaining 10 per cent of costs under the agreement.
- Once completed, the nearly Rs 15,000-crore project will allocate 836 cusecs to Haryana, 543.2 cusecs to Uttar Pradesh, 163.52 cusecs to Rajasthan, and 105.28 cusecs to Delhi.
- The initiative moves to the Union Cabinet for approval, marking a significant step toward rejuvenating the Yamuna River; this agreement follows an initial Memorandum of Understanding signed nearly three months ago.
