King and Queen to Visit Glasgow to Officially Open 2026 Commonwealth Games
The ceremony will feature Sir Chris Hoy and the first King’s Baton Relay as more than 3,000 athletes from 74 nations prepare to compete.
King Charles III and Queen Camilla will officially open the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on July 23 at The Hydro, where they will attend the Opening Ceremony to declare the event open.
The ceremony concludes the longest King's Baton Relay in history, spanning 500 days across 74 nations; the King will read the message he placed inside the baton at Buckingham Palace on March 10, 2025.
More than 3,000 athletes from 74 nations will compete for 215 gold medals during the 11-day event, with competition spanning 10 sports within an eight-mile corridor in Glasgow.
Six-Time Olympic gold medallist Sir Chris Hoy will participate in the ceremony, marking the Games' return to Glasgow 12 years after they were last held there.
Alongside the sporting events, the Commonwealth Clean Ocean Plastics Campaign continues its goal to keep one million pieces of plastic from entering Commonwealth waters, highlighting the Games' broader community focus.
