After KFC, Cyberattack Hits Japanese Ice Cream Giant

KFC Japan and Kura Sushi warned of shortages and possible closures as Nichirei said a cyberattack disrupted deliveries and other operations.

  • On Wednesday, Japan's top frozen food supplier Nichirei reported it "came under a cyberattack", disrupting logistics services for major clients including Kentucky Fried Chicken Japan and Kura Sushi Inc.
  • Nichirei first disclosed the incident on Monday, reporting "system failures caused by unauthorised access". The company is "investigating and taking measures to restore the systems" to address the disruption.
  • Kentucky Fried Chicken warned of potential shortages or store closures, while Kura Sushi Inc reported shipment delays for products in western Japan. Additionally, 20 percent of Glico ice cream products were impacted.
  • Japanese government spokesman Minoru Kihara addressed the incident Thursday, reminding businesses to keep their systems up to date. Nichirei plans to gradually restore services starting Friday.
  • This breach follows a pattern of cyberattacks on major Japanese firms, including a ransomware attack last year on beer giant Asahi and a disruption at retailer Muji involving its delivery partner Askul. Hacker group Qilin allegedly claimed responsibility for the Asahi attack.
