Key Pakistani Islamist party begins sit-in to protest increase in electricity bills
Hundreds of supporters of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan began a sit-in protest in Rawalpindi after authorities detained dozens to stop them from rallying in Islamabad due to security concerns.
The party called for the sit-in to pressure the government to withdraw a substantial increase in electricity costs, which have received nationwide criticism.
Naeem-Ur-Rehman, head of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, stated he is willing to continue the sit-in for weeks despite police arrests of many supporters.
