Cough Syrup Deaths: Kerala Bars Medicines without Prescription to Kids Under 12; Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu Step up Vigil
Kerala mandates prescriptions for all medicines to children under 12 after linking cough syrup to deaths elsewhere; inspections and awareness campaigns are being intensified, officials said.
- On Monday, Kerala Health Minister Veena George directed that no medicines be given to children below 12 years of age without a prescription from a certified medical practitioner.
- The move follows reports that fourteen children recently died in Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh, from suspected renal failure linked to ColdRif batch SR 13, distributed in Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Puducherry.
- Kerala suspended ColdRif sales and halted distribution through eight local distributors while a three-member expert committee was set up to study cough-medicine use and an urgent report was requested, with the Indian Academy of Paediatrics cooperating on paediatric training and public awareness.
- State inspections have been stepped up and the Drugs Control Department continues public education while the Kerala government directed the Drugs Controller to investigate any reported cases.
- The department emphasised that dosages depend on a child's weight, old medical prescriptions must not be reused, and parents and caregivers should not give medicines prescribed for one child to another.
