Kentucky State Parent Charged with Murder After Fatal Campus Shooting
Jacob Lee Bard faces murder and first-degree assault charges after shooting two students on campus, killing one and critically injuring another, police said.
- Authorities charged Jacob Lee Bard, 48, with murder and first-degree assault after a Dec. 9 shooting near a residence hall at Kentucky State University, Frankfort, Kentucky, killing student Darrell Fox Jr. and critically injuring another.
- Police say Bard is a parent of a Kentucky State student and an Evansville, Indiana resident about 175 miles west of Frankfort, and an arrest citation says he produced a handgun during a physical altercation on campus.
- When officers arrived at about 3:14 p.m., Kentucky State Campus Police already had the suspect in custody, and the Franklin County Coroner identified the deceased as Darrell Fox Jr., student, pronounced dead at 4:33 p.m. on Dec. 9.
- The university suspended all classes, activities and final exams for the remainder of the week, while Bard is scheduled for arraignment on Dec. 11 and support services continue.
- Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said `This was not a mass shooting or a random incident`, and Koffi Akakpo, President of Kentucky State University, confirmed counseling and support services are available.
