Kentucky Joins 48-State Coalition to Combat Scam Calls and Texts
Gentner Drummond and 48 other attorneys general want the Federal Communications Commission to tighten rules to curb illegal robocalls and scam texts.
- On Friday, Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman announced that Kentucky joined a 48-state coalition urging the Federal Communications Commission to implement stricter regulations on telephone number sales.
- According to the Robocall Index, more than 323 million robocalls were placed to Kentucky phones during the first six months of this year, prompting the coalition effort.
- The coalition requested the Federal Communications Commission require companies reselling phone numbers in North America to meet stronger certification rules and block sales to entities without calling services.
- "Strengthen rules that would cut off scammers' access to legitimate telephone numbers," Coleman said, noting that without such access, fraudsters cannot use real numbers to deceive consumers.
- Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond joined the initiative to protect residents from fraudsters who purchase legitimate phone numbers to bypass security and deceive unsuspecting consumers.
