Former Chelsea Owner and Chairman Ken Bates Dies Aged 94
Bates led Chelsea for 22 years and helped the club win six major trophies, including two FA Cups and a European title.
Former Chelsea Football Club and Leeds United owner Ken Bates has died at the age of 94. The Premier League announced his passing on Saturday.
Bates purchased Chelsea for £1 in 1982 and served as chairman for 22 years, guiding the club to two FA Cups, a League Cup, and the 1997 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.
Before his Leeds tenure, Bates held roles at Oldham Athletic, Wigan Athletic, and Partick Thistle. He acquired 50 percent of Leeds in 2005 and ran the club for seven years before selling to GFH Capital.
Chelsea officials expressed "great sadness" at the loss, extending heartfelt condolences to his wife Suzannah and family. The club noted his determination to fight for the Blues when times were tough.
In 2003, Bates sold his stake to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich and resigned as chairman eight months later. This concluded his transformative 22-year tenure at the West London club.
