GA National Guard Deployed For ICE Operations
Seventy-five Georgia National Guard troops will provide support services to assist ICE, allowing agents to focus on law enforcement tasks without performing arrests or carrying arms.
- On Monday, Gov. Brian Kemp announced the Georgia National Guard will mobilize 75 soldiers and airmen to support U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations statewide.
- Federal officials said in a July 25 statement that federal immigration authorities requested Department of Defense help with case management, transportation, and clerical support in a multistate effort including 20 states with Republican governors.
- The Georgia Guard will provide administrative and logistical tasks such as appointment scheduling, biometric collection, data entry and vehicle maintenance, remaining unarmed and under the governor and Adjutant General of Georgia, with training starting mid-September and duty shortly after.
- Democratic state legislators criticized the deployment as unconstitutional, while Gov. Brian Kemp and Georgia Senate Majority Leader Jason Anavitarte supported it as a border security effort aligned with President Trump's priorities.
- Officials said the support would free ICE agents to spend more time in the field, boosting enforcement capacity, while participating states and ICE coordinate locations and duty assignments, the bureau said Monday.
