Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms Elected Georgia Governor, Nation's First Black Woman Governor
Bottoms overcame a $100 million self-funded campaign by Rick Jackson and became Georgia’s first woman and first Black governor.
On Tuesday, Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms won the Georgia governor race, defeating Republican Rick Jackson and flipping control of the state's top office for the first time in 24 years.
Jackson, a billionaire healthcare executive, pumped more than $100 million of his own money into his campaign while associating with President Donald Trump. Bottoms countered by linking Jackson to Trump's unpopular policies and her affordability message.
Despite being outspent, AdImpact data showed pro-Jackson advertising at $271.5 million versus $32.8 million for pro-Bottoms spots. Late polls showed the candidates within the margin of error, making the race too close to call.
Bottoms' victory makes her the first Black woman to lead a U.S. state, marking a landmark moment for Georgia Democrats. Supporters gathered at the Marriott Marquis in Atlanta to celebrate the historic shift in the state's political landscape.
As governor, Bottoms plans to expand Medicaid and streamline housing assistance programs to address rising costs. She will also play a critical role in the certification of 2028 presidential election results.
Keisha Lance Bottoms will win the gubernatorial election in Georgia, NBC News predicts. That would make her the first Black female governor of the US. The Democrat ran against Republican billionaire Rick Jackson.
