Minimum Wage Changes Warning Ahead of Looming Autumn Budget
The think tank warns youth not in employment, education, or training could reach 1 million and urges policy changes to support young workers and training opportunities.
- On Tuesday, the Resolution Foundation urged the Government to change course on minimum wage plans, warning young people risk being priced out of entry into the labour market as Neet figures near one million.
- The think tank's statistics reveal some 940,000 young people are now classed as Neet, with sickness and disability driving over one in four cases and unemployment hitting 47% of men and 32% of women.
- The Recruitment and Employment Confederation survey found employers want more Government spending, while the Resolution Foundation warned 60% of young Neet never worked and almost half avoid the benefits system.
- A Government spokesperson said `Every young person should have the chance to thrive.` and highlighted plans to strengthen the national living and minimum wage for 3 million workers, returning £6m to workers' pockets.
- The Resolution Foundation also called for halting equalisation, changes to the work capability assessment, and a national 'front door' to re-engage young people, warning of lifetime harm without action.
