Chris Armas is the first former MLS head coach to lead an NWSL team, joining the 2025 Shield-winning Kansas City Current after a thorough club search.
- On Jan. 7, 2026, the Kansas City Current announced Chris Armas as head coach, making him the first to move directly from MLS to the NWSL.
- Chris Long said `We did run a full search, it's just that Chris never left the top of the list`.
- A former MLS head coach, Chris Armas led Colorado Rapids from 2024 to 2025, reaching the 2024 MLS playoffs, and was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame last year after 66 appearances for the United States men's national team.
- The club will retain Milan Ivanovic and Freya Coombe as assistants, and `Vlatko Andonovski said he looks forward to working closely with Armas` as the team pursues trophies.
- Angie Long said, `For what we're building, for where we're going, it was important for us to be able to bring in some new DNA in the organization`, while the Longs' stadium, training facility and business district investments make the Current job highly desirable.
