BJP, NCP (SP) Win Two Seats Each in Maharashtra MLC Polls
Kaustubh Gawade won the teachers’ seat after the BJP improved its western Maharashtra showing, while Harshada Deshmukh held the graduates’ seat for NCP(SP).
- On Wednesday, the Bharatiya Janata Party and Nationalist Congress Party shared the two Pune Division seats in the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections. BJP nominee Kaustubh Gawade won the Teachers' constituency, while NCP candidate Harshada Deshmukh-Jadhav retained the Graduates' seat.
- The elections for five Maharashtra Legislative Council seats, held on October 23, were necessitated because the terms of sitting members expire on December 6. A total of 1.06 million graduate and teacher voters were eligible to vote across 2,419 polling stations in these constituencies.
- In the Teachers' contest, Gawade secured 23,117 votes to defeat independent candidate Sachin Sanap. Deshmukh-Jadhav won the Graduates' constituency with 1,13,840 votes, defeating BJP candidate Smita Jadhav by a margin of 9,928 votes.
- While Mahayuti allies BJP and Shiv Sena secured one seat each, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi claimed victory in three constituencies, including Nagpur. This split verdict reflects a mixed outcome across the five contested seats.
- Senior NCP leader Jayant Patil attributed the outcome to graduates' concerns over unemployment and inflation. He claimed that "whenever elections are held through ballot papers, the opposition wins," highlighting the significance of ballot-based voting systems.
