Kallas: no consensus yet on 21st Russia sanctions package, though quite close
High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas has noted the lack of consensus regarding the introduction of the 21st package of sanctions against Russia, expressing hope for its adoption in the near future.
Lithuania hopes EU agrees on new Russia sanctions package by end of July
Lithuania’s Foreign Minister-designate Kęstutis Budrys said Monday he hopes European Union member states will approve the bloc’s 21st package of sanctions against Russia by the end of the month, warning that failure to reach a deal would undermine the EU’s credibility.
Despite the determination of some EU countries, including Lithuania, it seems that the 21st package of sanctions against Russia will ultimately be significantly reduced. For now, its fate is completely unclear: our country's Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys hopes that it will be approved this month, otherwise the EU will send a message that it is unable to agree on tougher measures for the Kremlin.
At the meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) on Monday, member states did not adopt the 21st package of sanctions against Russia. However, according to Marek Eštok, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs (MZVEZ) of the Slovak Republic, the package does not contain anything that would be against the economic interests of the Slovak Republic.
Lithuania will continue to seek that the European Union (EU), when approving the 21st package of sanctions against Russia, include major Russian energy companies in the list of restricted entities, says designated Minister of Foreign Affairs Kęstutis Budrys.
