Injured Ellis Scores, U.S. Blanks Canada 1-0 in Men’s Soccer Friendly
The win capped a 4-0 friendly window for the United States, which used 13 debutants and teenagers to reshape the roster.
On Tuesday, teenager Justin Ellis scored in the 29th minute to lift the United States to a 1-0 victory over Canada in an international friendly in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Canada head coach Jesse Marsch sparked pre-match tension by telling The Guardian on October 4 that America is a "propaganda-infused nation," while US manager Mauricio Pochettino focused on integrating youthful talent.
Ellis capitalized on an Alex Freeman strike in the 29th minute, while Canada's vice-captain Stephen Eustaquio suffered a collarbone injury and left the match at halftime.
Pochettino assessed the performance, stating "we managed really well, we competed really well," as the United States completed four consecutive international friendly victories during the window.
Both squads shift focus to November's CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinals, with the United States facing Haiti while Canada prepares for a two-legged matchup against Guatemala.
