U.S. jury awards US$29M damages to Boeing 737 Max victim’s family
The verdict follows a long-running civil case over the 2019 Ethiopian Airlines crash, after Boeing acknowledged anti-stall software failures in the MAX disasters.
- On Thursday, a Chicago jury awarded $29 million in damages to the family of Michael "Mick" Ryan, an Irish-born United Nations employee killed in the 2019 Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 MAX crash.
- Ryan, 39, was an engineer with the World Food Programme who performed humanitarian work in Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Ethiopia, and during the Ebola crisis in Liberia before the crash killed all 157 people on board.
- Seeking accountability, Naoise Connolly Ryan brought the civil suit against Boeing, with attorney Steven Marks stating his client was "committed to seeking accountability and justice from a jury and not accepting money from Boeing directly."
- In May, a Chicago jury awarded $49.5 million to the family of Samya Stumo, a 24-year-old American killed on the same Ethiopian Airlines flight, establishing precedent for damages in MAX crash litigation.
