Judge Orders Redrawing of Staten Island Congressional District by February
Judge rules current Staten Island district map weakens Black and Hispanic votes and orders the Independent Redistricting Commission to redraw lines by Feb. 6, officials said.
- Justice Jeffrey Pearlman on Wednesday voided Staten Island's congressional boundaries and ordered the Independent Redistricting Commission to finish a new map by Feb. 6, meeting state election officials' deadline.
- The lawsuit argued that the district's composition unconstitutionally dilutes Black and Hispanic residents' votes, brought by an election law firm aligned with the Democratic Party as part of a national gerrymandering fight.
- Given the compressed schedule, the co-executive director of the redistricting commission said meeting the deadline would be a challenge but that the commission is ready to try.
- The redraw could produce a much more liberal district easier for Democrats to win, but Republicans have promised to appeal and U.S. Rep. Nicole Malliotakis called it an attempt to `tilt the scale`.
- Candidate petitioning starts at the end of February and party primaries are roughly five months away, while the case could reach New York's Court of Appeals, potentially prolonging uncertainty.
