Judge blocks Kari Lake from firing Voice of America’s director
Judge Royce Lamberth ruled firing Voice of America Director Michael Abramowitz requires board approval, blocking U.S. Agency for Global Media chief Kari Lake's attempt amid staffing cuts.
- On Thursday, U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth ordered the reinstatement of Michael Abramowitz, Director of Voice of America, reversing Kari Lake's attempt to fire him effective Aug. 31 and ruling that the firing would be `plainly contrary to law`.
- Lamberth noted the removal rules require a majority vote by the International Broadcasting Advisory Board, which lacks quorum after the Trump administration fired the entire board earlier this year.
- The agency also houses Radio Free Europe and Asia and Radio Marti, and in June, layoff notices were sent to more than 600 employees of Voice of America and the U.S. Agency for Global Media.
- Lamberth nonetheless left open a potential path for the President to oust Michael Abramowitz by replacing removed board members, though the ruling marks a setback to the Trump administration's efforts.
