Trump attack defendant Cole Allen under harsher jail conditions than Jan. 6 defendants: Judge
The magistrate judge questioned whether Allen’s padded-cell lockdown and suicide watch were harsher than conditions for Jan. 6 defendants.
On Monday, Magistrate Judge Zia Faruqui criticized the Department of Corrections regarding restrictive jail conditions imposed on Cole Tomas Allen, who is accused of attempting to assassinate President Donald Trump.
Officials initially placed Allen in a padded cell under 24-hour lockdown after a jail psychiatrist labeled him a suicide risk, though defense attorneys argued the measures were punitive and unnecessary.
Faruqui called the treatment "extremely disturbing," noting that Allen faced harsher restrictions than defendants from the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack, despite having no criminal history.
Ordering the jail to provide Allen with a Bible and legal materials, the judge apologized for his recent treatment and demanded an update on his housing status by Tuesday.
While the jail has since moved Allen to protective custody, the court continues to monitor his confinement ahead of a preliminary hearing scheduled for May 11 to address the assassination charges.
