Hochul makes plea to Trump administration to extend protected status
Hochul warned ending protections could force hundreds of essential workers out of New York jobs and disrupt health care and other services, she said.
- New York Gov. Kathy Hochul urged the Trump administration to extend Temporary Protected Status for Haitians and Syrians in a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, warning of "human and economic" consequences.
- The Supreme Court's conservative majority ruled in June to overturn lower court decisions blocking the Trump administration's move to terminate TPS for more than 350,000 Haitians and 6,100 Syrians.
- Hochul warned that ending TPS "will force New York State and local governments to sever the employment of hundreds of essential employees as soon as next week," threatening healthcare services.
- A DHS spokesperson defended the decision, stating "Temporary Protected Status is exactly that — temporary" and that TPS has functioned as a "de facto amnesty program despite Congress never intending it to be permanent."
- New York is among several Democratic-controlled states suing to block TPS expiration, while last year Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem reversed a Biden-era extension for Haitian and Syrian immigrants.
