At the age of 16, José Martí used his pen when Bayamo began the war in 1868. The burning of the city in 1869 marked his life. From the exile, he woven ties with bayamesses. As a journalist, he paid tribute to his procers. He said he had "the fearless and natural soul" of Bayamo. His bond remains alive in the city's heritage.
