High blood sugar levels cause damage to different organs, such as the retinal blood vessels. Diabetic retinopathy appears then, one of the most frequent complications in diabetes patients, since "after 20 years of evolution, 60-70% of them will present some degree of retinopathy," says Dr. José Fernández-Miranda Cano, ophthalmologist at Ribera Polusa Hospital. Uncontrolled, retinopathy can lead to blindness.
