Former DUP leader Donaldson to renounce knighthood and Privy Council membership
His solicitor said the move could pre-empt formal forfeiture, after Donaldson was convicted of 18 sexual offences, including rape.
Former DUP leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson has moved to renounce his knighthood and Privy Council membership following his conviction on Monday for 18 sex offences, including one count of rape.
Political leaders including current DUP leader Gavin Robinson and Ulster Unionist leader Jon Burrows demanded the removal of his honours earlier this week, citing the seriousness of the convictions.
Solicitor John McBurney issued letters signed by Donaldson to the Cabinet Office and Privy Council, a move that could pre-empt the formal removal process requiring the King's approval.
During the four-week trial, victims provided evidence of offences committed between 1985 and 2008, leading Judge Paul Ramsey to warn the former political leader he faces a "lengthy" prison term.
Former appeal court judge Sir John Gillen noted a "sea change" in how courts handle sexual offences, citing implementation of around 86% of his 250 recommendations designed to protect victims.
