Jay-Z Celebrates Two Album Anniversaries With Back-to-Back Yankee Stadium Shows
Rapper Jay-Z launched his three-night residency at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx on Friday, performing for nearly 45,000 fans. His wife Beyoncé made a surprise appearance, singing the classic chorus originally performed by Mary J. Blige on "Can't Knock the Hustle."
The residency celebrates the 30th anniversary of Reasonable Doubt and the 25th anniversary of The Blueprint, two albums that reshaped hip-hop. Roc Nation added a third show on July 12 due to high demand.
Backed by a 10-person band and 18-piece string section, Jay-Z performed alongside guests Nas, Jaz-O, and daughter Blue Ivy Carter. A 2,952-square-foot outfield-spanning screen displayed images from his early days in New York.
Yankees chief financial officer Scott Krug said, "The tickets sold as quickly for this event as any that I've ever seen." Prices have fluctuated, with weekend tickets ranging from $168 to $332 across resale platforms.
Concluding the run, a show billed as Extra Innings will build on the previous nights' history lessons. Professor Isra Ali of NYU Steinhardt noted, "the value of in-person contact goes up," reflecting growing hunger for authentic live music.
