Japan’s tech business SoftBank rolls out OpenAI ‘patches’ against cyberattacks

The service will diagnose weaknesses and patch holes for Japan’s top 3,000 infrastructure firms as AI-driven attacks grow more complex, SoftBank said.

  • On Tuesday, SoftBank Group Corp. and OpenAI launched a cybersecurity service in Tokyo to protect Japan's critical infrastructure from escalating cyberattacks.
  • SoftBank and OpenAI, creators of ChatGPT, formed a 50:50 joint venture named OAI Japan last year to develop and exclusively market AI-savvy defenses for the Japanese market.
  • Targeting the nation's top 3,000 companies, the service diagnoses weaknesses in critical infrastructure like airports and power systems, then analyzes how to patch vulnerabilities.
  • While OpenAI chief Sam Altman missed the event due to a family emergency, chief researcher Mark Chen attended in his place, and SoftBank offered free diagnoses to all attendees.
  • Son emphasized his duty to combat criminal attackers, whom he calls 'the bad guys,' as AI-driven threats grow increasingly complex and require AI-savvy defenses.
