Japan records 5th straight yearly trade deficit

Japan's export growth slowed to 5.1% in December 2025 with U.S. shipments falling 11.1%, while imports rose 5.1%, marking a fifth straight annual trade deficit, officials said.

  • Thursday's data showed Japan posted a fifth straight annual trade deficit in 2025, with a 105.7 billion yen surplus in December, 12% smaller than last year.
  • Exports rose 6.1% in December 2025, falling short of Reuters-polled analysts' 6.1%, as U.S.-bound shipments declined 11.1%.
  • Official numbers confirm that Japan's annual exports rose 6.1%, while December's 105.7 billion yen trade surplus was 12% smaller than last year.
  • As Japan heads to snap elections on Feb. 8, the trade data arrives with the Lower House set to be dissolved Friday, and Sam Jochim says a Takaichi win `poses the potential for a more expansive fiscal policy`.
  • Broader pressures include United States tariffs at 15% after a trade deal and China’s export controls on rare earths, which risk disrupting Japanese automakers’ supply chains.
