Japan maritime force revamps structure to boost remote island defense
The Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force on Monday revamped its organizational structure to speed decision-making and improve ship operations, as part of efforts to strengthen the defense of remote islands amid China's growing assertiveness.
The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) carried out its largest-ever organizational restructuring on the 23rd. Amidst a worsening security environment, including escalating tensions in the Middle East, surveillance and monitoring missions have increased dramatically, while there is a shortage of personnel among ship crews. The restructuring aims to unify the command structure and streamline the units.
JMSDF Launches 'Fleet Surface Force', Scrapping Decades-Old 'Escort Fleet'
On March 23, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) formally disbanded its long-standing “Fleet Escort Force” (護衛艦隊) and established a new “Fleet Surface Force” (水上艦隊), marking its most sweeping organizational overhaul since 1954.
