Jamia Millia Islamia moves classes online amid row over slogans raised at protest
Students want an official election schedule after the union has been inactive since 2006, while police detained 10 people, including Congress MP Imran Masood.
Jamia Millia Islamia University shifted all classes online on Saturday, citing safety concerns after 13 days of student protests demanding elected representation and Friday's detention of Congress MP Imran Masood near the New Delhi campus.
Students began an indefinite hunger strike on October 12 demanding restoration of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students' Union , which has not held elected representation since 2006.
The university administration condemned controversial campus graffiti, including slogans like "VC go back," and ordered an investigation. The Vishva Hindu Parishad warned against the institution becoming a "hub of anti-India activities," demanding police action.
Before his detention, Congress MP Imran Masood condemned the "Free Kashmir" slogans, asserting that Kashmir is an "integral part of India" and alleging the police presence targeted the student movement.
Student representatives rejected the administration's committee proposal, maintaining their hunger strike until the university announces a clear election schedule and removes the Chief Proctor and Security Advisor.
