Jamaica could face days of hurricane conditions as Melissa set to rapidly intensify in the Caribbean

The storm could bring hurricane conditions to Jamaica for 72 hours with up to 14 inches of rain, risking severe flooding and landslides, officials said.

  • On Friday, October 24, 2025 the National Hurricane Center said Tropical Storm Melissa had strengthened to near-hurricane force, located about 185 miles southeast of Kingston with 45 mph winds moving east-southeast at 1 mph.
  • During the Atlantic hurricane season, Tropical Storm Melissa is the 13th named storm and first in the Caribbean this year, amid NOAA's forecast of 13 to 18 storms through Nov. 30.
  • The storm's slow motion means parts of Jamaica could face hurricane conditions for 72 hours or longer, while Jamaica's eastern region could receive up to 14 inches of rain risking flooding and landslides.
  • At least three people were reported killed in Haiti amid landslides and flooding, schools and government offices closed in Jamaica, and nearly a million customers lost water service in the Dominican Republic.
  • The hurricane center now predicts Melissa will reach peak sustained winds of around 155 mph within 60 hours, with forecasters expecting rapid intensification over very warm waters and lighter wind shear.
