'I've never experienced this level of resentment': Sikh community facing backlash after Henry Nowak murder
The federation says misinformation and police failures fueled backlash after bodycam footage was released, and 14 people have been charged with disorder.
Since Vickrum Digwa was sentenced to life imprisonment at Southampton Crown Court for murdering 18-year-old Henry Nowak, the Sikh Federation claims Sikhs have faced daily assaults nationwide.
Prosecutors initially accepted Digwa's claim that his 21cm murder weapon was a religious kirpan, despite it being a straight blade. The Sikh Federation called this misinformation "highly damaging" to Sikhs.
Violent protests erupted in Southampton last Tuesday after police released body-worn footage of the incident. A total of 14 people have been charged with disorder in connection with the disturbances.
The National Police Chiefs' Council announced a review of anti-racism guidance following the case. The Sikh Federation described the Independent Office for Police Conduct's investigation into Hampshire police as "entirely insufficient."
Dabinderjit Singh, chief executive for political engagement at the Sikh Federation, criticized political figures including Nigel Farage and Vice President JD Vance for allegedly fueling tensions by exploiting the incident.
