It’s so hot in Arizona, doctors are treating a spike of patients who were burned by falling on the ground

  • Record-Breaking heat in Maricopa County, Arizona has led to an increase in significant and sometimes life-threatening burn injuries. Patients are being brought into the emergency room after falling on the ground and sustaining burns. The number and severity of injuries are higher than usual, overwhelming the Arizona Burn Center.
  • The extreme heat is causing the ground, particularly asphalt, to become dangerously hot. Asphalt can be 40 to 60 degrees hotter than the air temperature on a hot day, leading to rapid and deep burns. The severity of burns is comparable to those seen in house fires, requiring extensive medical treatment and therapy.
