It’s not easy being freed

Reality is complex and seldom conforms to the combination of cliché, opportunist generalisation and sometimes mistily wishful thinking that propel most of our politics. The High Court’s majority decision this week in the case of NZYQ, a stateless Rohingya man detained with no prospect of release, is a pretty fair demonstration of that complexity.
