ITRI Wins Runner-Up at 2025 World Robot Summit Harsh Environment Drone Challenge
ITRI set records for farthest UAV rescue point and indoor FPV drone deployment while completing three rapid rescue missions at the World Robot Summit, officials said.
- On Nov. 17, 2025, the Industrial Technology Research Institute won second place at the World Robot Summit Harsh Environment Drone Challenge, setting two HEDC firsts.
- The Harsh Environment Drone Challenge evaluates UAVs in post-disaster search-and-rescue scenarios, and this year simulated disrupted roads and communications at Japan's Fukushima Robot Test Field.
- Using mother-and-FPV drone tactics, ITRI's drones used optimized electric propulsion and sensor-fusion technologies, while small FPV drones airlifted by mother drones navigated narrow, debris-filled interiors.
- During strong winds and limited bandwidth, the team completed a 13-kilometer offshore flight, and ITRI plans to boost UAV resilience with relay communications, satellite connectivity, and lightweight AI modules.
- ITRI, founded in 1973 and headquartered in Taiwan with offices in the U.S., Germany, the UK, Japan and Thailand, has transformed Taiwan's industries and incubated major companies like UMC and TSMC.
