Italy's privacy watchdog, scourge of US big tech, hit by corruption probe
Italian prosecutors investigate alleged corruption and excessive spending at the Garante, the EU's leading AI data privacy regulator, involving its president and board members.
- On Jan 15, Italian finance police searched Italy's data protection authority, the Garante's Rome headquarters amid a probe into possible corruption and embezzlement, Reuters reported.
- Rome prosecutors are investigating Pasquale Stanzione, agency president, and three other Garante board members over alleged excessive spending and possible corruption, while Stanzione repeatedly declined to say if he would step down.
- The Garante is one of the EU's most proactive regulators, frequently requesting information and imposing fines on high-tech multinationals in AI compliance cases.
- The opposition Five-Star Movement said the agency's credibility had been undermined and called for Pasquale Stanzione to resign, while Stanzione told reporters he was `absolutely serene`.
- Last week the regulator warned users and providers of AI tools, including Elon Musk's Grok, about deepfake risks, and it previously fined and briefly banned OpenAI's ChatGPT and blocked DeepSeek over privacy concerns.
