Italian judges on Tuesday struck down a contested government ban on remote check-ins for holiday rentals, saying that it lacked “adequate” legal grounds and placed excessive burdens on landlords.

Italy's Lazio Administrative Court has lifted a government ban on remote registration for short-term apartment rentals, which had been in force since November, Reuters reported today.

The Italian Ministry of the Interior had banned key boxes on the grounds that a check-in without a personal meeting between the guest and the tenant was a security risk. A court has now overturned this.

At least for now: this could facilitate the use of key boxes, which however in some cities will remain prohibited
