Britain Has a Giant Rat Problem - Here’s Why
REDCAR AND CLEVELAND, NORTH YORKSHIRE, AUG 5 – Experts link warmer summers and increased food waste to rising urban rat sizes, with a 22-inch rat caught prompting calls for enhanced vermin control in Redcar and Cleveland.
- Earlier this week, a homeowner in Normanby district, Redcar and Cleveland, called exterminators after finding a rat said to be the size of a small cat inside their home.
- Experts warn that warmer summers and plentiful street food waste are helping giant rats of 22 inches or more thrive, as climate change boosts survival.
- Mr Stephen Martin noted the rat measured about 56cm from nose to tail, roughly the length of carry-on luggage, while Professor Steven Belmain said Norway rats can reach 22 inches when well fed.
- Following the rodent’s capture, councillors urged the council to reinstate pest control services for residents, as Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council no longer provides private pest control due to budget cuts.
- Amid rising infestations, experts warn that growing rat populations may raise transmission of rat-borne diseases such as hantavirus, which killed Gene Hackman’s wife this year, and Weil’s disease, the report said.
