'Sea cannibal' spreads in Baltic, threatening native species
Resembling a jellyfish, glowing in the dark, and even eating its own young, the comb jelly Mnemiopsis leidyi is one of the strangest sea creatures and is spreading ever more aggressively throughout the Baltic Sea.

The comb jellyfish (Mnemiopsis leidyi), also known as the sea nut or cannibal, is invading the Venetian Lagoon. Since its arrival, catches of the main species have declined by over 40 percent. The species has also been recorded in the Gulf of Gdańsk and the Bay of Pomerania. However, the General Directorate for Environmental Protection (GDOŚ) estimates that it does not form a permanent population in Polish waters.
