Israeli authorities suspended 37 NGOs in Gaza for failing to meet new staff disclosure rules, risking major disruptions to aid amid worsening humanitarian conditions, UN and EU officials warn.
- The Ministry of Diaspora Affairs announced that, as of 1 January, 37 international NGOs in Gaza, the occupied West Bank, and East Jerusalem had their licenses suspended after official notices on Dec. 30.
- The rules require international non-governmental organisations to provide extensive personal details of Palestinian staff, a demand NGOs say breaches humanitarian principles and endangers employees.
- Among the named groups are Doctors Without Borders , the Norwegian Refugee Council and Oxfam; MSF said if prevented from working, it will deprive hundreds of thousands of medical care.
- Dujarric said, "This announcement comes on top of earlier restrictions that have already delayed critical food, medical, hygiene and shelter supplies from entering Gaza. This recent action will further exacerbate the humanitarian crisis facing Palestinians."
- With winter conditions worsening, last year the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza, while eight foreign ministers called for opening the Rafah Crossing.
