Kingston Man Among Those in Gaza-Bound Flotilla Seized by Israel, Officials Say
Israeli commandos seized control of boats carrying more than 500 activists and aid workers, organizers said, after the flotilla challenged the Gaza blockade.
Israeli Forces intercepted 11 vessels of the Global Sumud Flotilla 2.0 in international waters, boarding the ships and detaining participants while en route to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.
Aiming to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, the civilian-led mission challenged the long-standing blockade from approximately 241 nautical miles from the coast when intercepted.
Sumud Nusantara Command Centre officials confirmed eight Malaysian participants were detained, with Israeli Forces deploying two warships and a prison ship during the interception.
Demanding enforcement of international law, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition urged governments to act, calling for "demanding the prompt release of vessels" and "restricting trade with Israel."
Organizers warned that Israeli actions violate the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which mandates freedom of navigation and prohibits warships from boarding foreign vessels on the high seas.
