GAZA STRIP, AUG 5 – Israel will allow vetted local merchants to import essential goods into Gaza under strict security controls to increase aid volume while preventing Hamas exploitation, officials said.
- On August 5, 2025, Israel announced a pilot initiative permitting selected Gaza-based traders, vetted by security officials, to gradually and carefully introduce approved goods such as food and hygiene products into the territory.
- Following a directive from the Cabinet, measures were approved to broaden the range of humanitarian aid permitted into Gaza in response to the crisis triggered by the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, and the subsequent conflict.
- The authorized items permitted for entry consist of essential food items, infant nutrition, fresh produce, and personal care products, with local vendors thoroughly vetted for security and all consignments examined by the Land Crossings Authority.
- COGAT announced that the IDF, in coordination with security agencies, will maintain strict oversight to ensure Hamas does not participate in the delivery and distribution of aid, while over 300 trucks remain on standby inside Gaza awaiting distribution.
- The pilot aims to increase aid volume and reduce reliance on international organizations, though the UN refused participation citing concerns over aid militarization and neutrality.
