Palestinian militants hand over body of another Gaza hostage
The return of hostage remains is part of a US-brokered ceasefire that has seen 22 bodies returned and aims to reduce hostilities between Israel and Palestinian militants.
- On Friday, Palestinian militants handed a coffin carrying a deceased hostage found in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, to Israel's military and prime minister's office via the Red Cross at 2100 local time.
- The US-brokered ceasefire that began on Oct. 10 stipulated Hamas return remains of 28 deceased hostages in exchange for remains of 360 militants and included prisoner releases.
- Records show Hamas-led militants seized 251 hostages and killed about 1,200 people in the Oct. 7, 2023 attack, and so far 22 of the 28 deceased hostages have been returned.
- Families of returned hostages held funerals and tributes, including eulogies for Israeli-American soldier Omer Neutra, 21, after his remains were returned, leaving five other bodies still in Gaza if confirmed.
- Identification remains difficult because DNA labs are not allowed in Gaza, even as the ceasefire's partial calm allows returns; Israel accuses Hamas of delaying returns while Hamas says many bodies lie under Gaza rubble.
