IDF uses Ro'em self-propelled howitzer artillery for first time in southern Lebanon
The new system can fire up to 8 shells a minute and reach targets 40 kilometers away, the IDF said.
- The Israel Defense Forces operated the Ro'em self-propelled howitzer in southern Lebanon for the first time on Thursday. Also known as SIGMA, the system features an automated turret designed for precision strikes against Iran-backed Hezbollah.
- Hezbollah's violation of a previous ceasefire and failure to disarm under United Nations Security Council resolution 1701 prompted the ongoing conflict. Since March 2, nearly 2,300 people have been killed in Lebanon, and 17 Israelis have died.
- Produced by Elbit Systems of America, the Ro'em allows a three-person crew to fire at targets roughly 40 kilometers away. Its automation enables 'shoot-and-scoot' tactics, reducing exposure to counter-battery fire compared to the older M109 system.
- During the operation, the 282nd Fire Brigade targeted Hezbollah anti-tank positions in defensive strikes. Chief Artillery Officer Ehud Bibi stated the system is 'reshaping how firepower is employed,' marking a milestone in supporting ground forces.
- Defense Minister Israel Katz pledged security for northern Israelis, noting that if the Lebanese government fails to fulfill obligations, 'the IDF will do so through continued military activity.' Washington is hosting further talks this coming Thursday.
