Israel Opens Inquiry Into Blindfolded Gaza Detainee Photo
Israel says the image is genuine and an inquiry is underway as two Palestinian mothers say the detainee is their missing son.
On Saturday, Israel opened an inquiry into a photo showing a blindfolded Gaza man restrained in custody, acknowledging the image is genuine and the treatment "does not align" with military values.
The image appeared in an Instagram post captioned "good morning" in Hebrew, depicting a blindfolded man stripped to his underwear with a wooden rod bound to his back from foot to neck.
Two Palestinian mothers, Rana Abu Nassar and Joudeh Al-Ghoul, believe the man is their missing son; Abu Nassar recognized her son Osama by scars on his leg, while Al-Ghoul identified her son Amin by his features.
The military said "those involved will be dealt with in accordance with the findings," while Amani Sarahneh of the Palestinian Prisoners Society noted lawyer visits remain difficult despite submitting detainee names.
Around 1,200 Palestinians are held in Israel under the Internment of Unlawful Combatants Law, which permits unlimited detention for those believed to have participated in hostile acts; authorities have not identified the man.
